That question comes up often, and the standard answer is that mutt only
has to be able to read and handle your mail; it doesn't have to ship it
out or receive it (both the job of an MTA/MDA).  By expecting to call a
sendmail program, mutt gives you more flexibility.

If you don't want the auth warnings, then either modify your MTA config
to allow resets on the command line or just use a different MTA; a few
lightweight agents have been suggested before for folks popping their
mail down over a dialup connection who have no real need of a full
sendmail config -- the folks who *usually* ask the "why doesn't mutt
talk to port 25?" question.
