  I believe you.  I had varying levels of success with previous SB Server 
versions 7.x but 7.5.4 just reboots MVPMC.

  I use a Squeezebox Radio and notice that it usually wants a firmware update 
right about the same time they release a new Server.  They could easily bundle 
protocol changes in their software updates that render old clients virtually 
useless.

  The "best" option would be building another PC-ish media client but it would 
sure be nice if I could use stuff I already have.

  I currently use my MVPMC as a networked MPEG-2 player by sharing a HTTP URI 
in a M3U playlist file, pointing at a LAN stream served by VLC.  Do you think 
the same technique would work to decode a MP3 stream?

<contents>
http://192.168.x.x:9000/stream.mp3

  I'd have to set up the Squeezebox Server playlist through other means, but at 
least I could play background music.
