I chose to do something similar for one of my ASUS routers; it was a refurb
with a now ancient draft N radio not well supported by the OpenWrt drivers,
limiting me to the 2.4.x kernel.  Luckily, the radio came in the form of a Mini
PCI card, and the ONLY card still available at Newegg supports the Atheros 9K
open source driver.  So, $20 later mine could support the 2.6.x kernel which
meant I could get Squeezeslave running on it. ;)

For music streaming elsewhere I'm using mpd/mpc on another router, and
wget/madplay on the third.  Those work fine but don't support player
synchronization or volume control from the Logitech Server web page.  I have
grown to really like Squeezeslave.

Yeah, I have a spare Ethernet/Wifi bridge I could put into service if need
be, but that's just another box to power.

It's already pretty well suited to general embedded environments (see above
ASUS router discussion), but one major caveat makes a MVPMC port difficult:

That's the major problem.  I believe Squeezeslave uses Portaudio and a mix of
support for OSS & ALSA, so there might be a good bit of rewriting on the driver
side alone.

There are passively cooled PC platforms as well, but I got over my aversion
to 24/7 fans when I built my first dedicated HTPC in 2006.  The key is making
the platform quiet.  I already know it isn't exactly power-efficient. ;)

That alone has pushed me to favor generic x86 compatible media clients,
although things like OpenWrt open the door to wider small processor support.  I
just like having more control over the firmware; need a new codec?  Add it!
Etc.
