I hope you will recognize that what you stated as a problem is _not_ what this thread was about.
You are talking about -- (a) A new (and as yet non-universal) version of MySQL (b) Only binary data (c) Conf done by you, which is not standard Whereas the thread was about simple Japanese multibyte display. You'll notice that being more specific and relevant within the context of a mailing list thread is more fruitful as Paul indicated in an earlier note. Anyway, hope you sort out your problem (if there is one).
