Just a thought, but perhaps you could set up a master/slave on the box such that the master points to a RAM disk and the slave points to disk. Then if someone pulls the plug or the machine crashes, you'd still have almost all of the data on disk. On startup, copy the slave's files to the RAM disk, make a backup copy somewhere, and start both MySQL servers. This setup wouldn't require changing any SQL.
