It's a fairly low pressure thing to me, I'm pretty comfortable asking. I
just ask matter-of-factly...and I crack jokes a lot, so I will say "Today's
total is ONE MILLION DOLLARS....would you like all of it on the card? No?
Ok, how much then?"

Don't make it dramatic and it won't be. It's not a big deal. And why feel
bad if you're hinting for a tip? We are in a tipping industry, you're paying
taxes as if you get tips. Waitresses bring back ones when they bring your
change... don't feel weird.   :)
