I used the cheat sheet as well (thanks also to Tammy Taylor... lol). I also for pedicures, and when it is quiet in the salon, use a 60 minute relaxation CD... it is broken up into approximately 15 minute tracks, and the last one starts with birds chirping, so when I hear the birds I know I have 15 minutes left and can get my butt in gear accordingly!!! LOL... the stuff us nail techs come up with... :)
And Katherine, I got you beat. My first full set took me 7 hours (they all fell off in the following 48!!!), and back when I was an educator and in really super top form, I did a full set video for Tammy in 19 minutes... (I wanted her to see that I was chasing down her record... LOL). So, see our dear little newbie, it all takes time. Use all your resources, be committed to kicking nail butt, practice your hiney off, and you will get there. 15 years and tons of mentoring knows it :) Take care! Work ethic is so important and you have it. The cheat sheets are a great idea….I did that too. I would get talking…especially during a pedi …. and totally forget what I was supposed to be doing. Pretty sure I missed a ton of steps along the way. Pretty sure that might still even happen today ;) The difference is, I will know if I need to go back and fix that or if I can leave it, and that just comes from experience. Best thing to do is ask your boss to give you constructive feedback. So many people only take time to tell you what you didn’t do right. What you did do right is just as important, and I’m sure with your attitude, you’ve managed to get lots of things right already. I get easily distracted when I'm talking while I'm busy doing the nails. That's a very great idea thank you very much Katherine!! Before I went on to the next step, I checked my "cheat sheet" to be sure that I did not miss any steps. I would get to chatting up the client and forget steps! Very bad! Do not worry about looking stupid with the "cheat sheet" , put it in a discreet place where you can see it but the client can't. Like taped to the edge of your table or pedicure cart. It is better to have the check list and not miss any steps than to mess up and have an unhappy client. The "cheat sheet" is also helpful to get your speed up. Group the steps into 4 - 15 minute groupings And work on completing the steps in the allotted time to finish the service in one hour. You will also see where you need to improve. If it takes you more than 15 minutes to file and shape the nails, you need to spend more time applying the product to require less filing. The owner should be able to help you to group the steps into 15 minute sets. Showing initiative in improving your technique and speed will let the owner see the effort that you are putting into you art and make him/her more patient.
