In all of my (many) installations I have grounded both ends as the Rane
note suggests and rarely had problems, notably computer multi output
soundcards at -10dBu when wired with long cables.
The issue used to be with 'hum' pickup but now with everyone packing a
mobile phone and multiple RF transmitters (computers, switchmode
supplies in things etc) having screens grounded to chassis at BOTH ends
is necessary to keep out these RF radiations. A possible diversion could
be to use a capacitor to give HF ground but 'break' mains frequency hum
to help in extreme situations where ground lifting seems to be the only
solution.
To begin with ground everwhere and if pushed it is quick to snip a few
later.

loops and the resulting hum they cause. Since patch bays are used to
connect various pieces of equipment, which can be at different ground
potentials if everything isn't electrically copacetic with the studio
mains wiring and/or other issues, there can be some induced hum if all
shields are connected at both ends. Even if the shield is only
connected at one end, you will get the benefit from it.
