Hi Doug,
I appreciate the plug for our products, but we didn't close source Nessus
3 to sell more of our enterprise tools. We had lots of take and little
contribution back. Nessus 2 is still there, will be maintained and is GPLed.
If folks don't trust Tenable, they can look at Nessus 2 code and the code
in the NASLs.
I'd also advise folks to be careful asking their management about open
source code in general. We've gotten a lot of 'thank you' emails from
organizations where open source code was not permitted and now these folks
will be able to use Nessus 3. Even though it's almost the end of 2005,
a lot of organizations don't allow open source in their network.

Despite saying much of this in the initial announcement email, I feel that
the passion expressed here is important. It, to me, reaffirms a commitment
to making sure that the GPL version is adequately supported. It allows
many places that cannot afford Tenable's other products to be able to have
a nice scanner that they know they can trust, from the perspective that
they don't have to trust Tenable (they can just look at the code).
For those of us with the means (including the organization I work for),
encouragement of Tenable's efforts on the Open Source side of things
becomes even more crucial. Make sure that you encourage your management to
buy the products. They are certainly good enough (really, I've used others
that are "enterprise class", and Tenable's kicks the crap out of them),
but more importantly, they have given and continue to give back to the
community.
