the GNOME method.  And I assume that the second method is
to set up process environment variables.  We will consider

I don't see how you could actually set the variables in another process that is already running or even how you can set them for ones that start up later.

I was just pointing out that there is already a de-facto standard for this in may "UNIX" applications.
