Not necessarily true. For style 1, the PPA is determined by the file
path, which for a real driver, is usually the minor number. But, one
can imagine a style 1 provider in userland that doesn't use minor
numbers. (Indeed, not just imagine one, I've written such a "pseudo"

Yes, that would be a problem. But,
afaik, the convention of using VLANs for PPAs > 1000 means that pretty
much all drivers are confined to less than 1000 PPAs.
I was assuming that someone would remove that godawful hack when
Clearview delivers ;-)
It would certainly be nice. It may be nigh to impossible to remove it
now, given that it is firmly entrenched at various sites.
