Thanks for your suggestion.  

I finally got things set up so that the timidity directory is in the
right place,
now I get a box labelled: 

Netscape:subprocess diagnostics (stdout/stderr)
Couldn't open Linux dsp device
Couldn't open Linux dsp device
Couldn't open Linux dsp device

What do I do now?
