I've seen people with SMP desktops boast about how one processor could be applying a filter in the GIMP, while the other is getting email, or something. They say the system is more responsive under load. Doesn't make it true, of course (and I think kernel 2.6 will give a _much_ more responsive desktop anyway, something about breaking uninterruptible tasks up into smaller ones).
