GR I switched to LILO graphics for booting. If I hit escape while the LILO
GR graphics menu is up, it simply switches to the LILO text prompt. If I
GR hit escape after the making a selection from the LILO menu and the
GR kernel has started loading, absolutely nothing happens - the kernel just
GR keeps on loading. It definitely doesn't switch to the blue Mandrake
GR window that John showed.

Hmm, right now - mine shows the Mandrake 9.2 logo in the right hand lower corner, and it has a loading (progress) bar going from left to right across the middle of the screen with the message "Press Escape for verbose mode". I fI hit escape, it goes to a screen on top of the original screen with the scrolling bootup text messages. (Same thing for when I logout).

It finally winds up at the login screen showing my account and my wifes'.

Just different setups, I guess. :-)

Yes, It's confusing.

I'm getting a bit lost now.

See, my blue gui boot script arrived after I reinstalled the standard M9.1 distro kernel, the very same one as on the discs. It added something new that seems to dominate the boot procedure. All this confusion is not helped by the splashscreen package names , very confusing since it's the boot script we are trying to return to text mode, not the splash screen, but never mind , so long as the confusing name is understood, so well and good.

But I've done the urpme splashscreen bit and removed the gui shutdown, but the bootup remains blue screen gui.

I haven't tried these two yet, should I ?

Edit /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash
set SPLASH=no

Open lilo.conf in the editor of your choice and change the append:
splash=quiet
