No. 5/04, 24 February 2004

The sixth edition of the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC)
publication, Australian crime: facts and figures, will provide important
information for agencies involved in fighting crime across Australia, the
Acting Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology, Dr Toni Makkai,
said today.

"Australian crime: facts and figures 2003 has been expanded to include
information on fraud and cybercrime while continuing to provide a useful
national statistical snapshot of crime in Australia," Dr Makkai said.

Drug arrest data shows that persons charged with supply-type offences has
gone up for heroin and amphetamines. The National Household Survey on Drugs
shows that illicit drug use has decreased.

The percentage of homicides committed with a firearm continued to decline.

In the past two years, there has been a 29 per cent decrease in armed
robberies. Burglaries have also been declining over this period.

Forty-two per cent of organisations surveyed experienced a harmful computer
security incident and the virus/worm/trojan infection was the most frequently
encountered type of cybercrime.

"The AIC continues its role as a valuable clearing house for data on crime and
criminal justice statistics," Dr Makkai said.

The report includes a number of different types of recorded crimes, their
place of occurrence, victim details, responses of criminal justice agencies
and data on government resources directed to deal with crime.

This publication uses statistics from the AIC as well as data holdings at the
Australian Bureau of Statistics and other government agencies.

Never mud wrestle with a pig.. you get dirty and the pig enjoys it!
Never try to teach a pig to dance. You waste your time and annoy the pig.
Theoretically pigs can fly if propelled with enough force.
