Seems strange, because all my other plugins are in /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins, and the nppdf.so was there and showed up in the "About>plugins" section, but it didn't work. With the nppdf.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, now pdf's open within Moz. Thanks e
