Ok...and that all tracks, but just now doing a (ps ax|grep gmc) i don't see the 
process gmc listed anywhere as running. 

        [root@mdw1982 root]# ps ax|grep gmc
        27637 pts/0    S      0:00 grep gmc
        [root@mdw1982 root]# kill 27637
        bash: kill: (27637) - No such pid
