Hi ET,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. /etc/resolv.conf just looks
like this:
192.168.0.1
IIRC correctly that's just a standard private IP. You say that DNS
doesn't work, but it works when I use ping or FTP ! What is the problem
with http?
Thanks,
David.

Hi,
I've just installed Mandriva Linux and I can ping any host on the
Internet, FTP to any host on the internet, but any browser just sits
there and times out. I've tried all the installed browsers and
lynx. Telnetting to www.yahoo.com on port 80 seems to reveal the
problem - it just sits there saying "Trying 1.0.0.0...", now if I
telnet to the IP address of www.yahoo.com on port 80, I can type GET
index.html and get the index page. So DNS lookup works - as I can
get the IP address from the ping command and obviously the interface
is working as I can manually retrieve pages with the IP and
telnet... anyone know what is wrong here?
I'm using DHCP and setting the DNS servers automatically.
Thanks,
David.

nope, these symptoms mean (to me anyway) DNS is NOT working right, you
need a DNS server upstream that is "alive" what does "cat
/etc/resolv.conf" (without the quotes, as root, in a text console) say?
