Well, I am no expert at this, but I think 1.0.0.0 may be a gateway,

what does # netstat -nr tell you ?

So guessing but is the service running ? try look for
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc # lsof -i -n | egrep 'COMMAND|LISTEN'
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
...
mDNSRespo 5588 nobody 7u IPv4 13156 TCP 127.0.0.1:5335 (LISTEN)
...

or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc # netstat -luntp
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address
State PID/Program name
...
...
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5335 0.0.0.0:*
LISTEN 5588/mDNSResponder
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5353 0.0.0.0:*
        5588/mDNSResponder
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5353 0.0.0.0:*
        5588/mDNSResponder
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5353 0.0.0.0:*
        5588/mDNSResponder
...
...

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc # cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 peace
XX.XXX.XXX.XXX irsissz
XX.XXX.XXX.XXX seeker
