I have such a hard drive ( that works fine ) but you trouble me with this two usb thing. Basically the lead offers two ways you can connect, one for when you are supplying power to the hard drive directly and the other when you are not. My point here is that I believe only one ought to be connected ????? not both !
dmesg is :

usb 3-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
scsi2 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 6
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

Here I must wait for 10-20 Seconds and after

hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 1
usb 3-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 2 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

When I connect only the data connector :

hub 3-0:1.0: over-current change on port 1
usb 3-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 7
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

Here I must wait for 10-20 Seconds and after

usb 3-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 3 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

So the Log it's quite the same, and the results too.
The modules for usb are loaded :

ehci_hcd 31016 0
ohci_hcd 20804 0
usbcore 111644 7 usb_storage,usblp,usbmouse,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
sg 35676 0
usb_storage 82756 0
scsi_mod 123784 2 sg,usb_storage

Thanks for any support
