I have such a hard drive ( that works fine ) but you trouble me with
this two usb thing. Basically the lead offers two ways you can connect,
one for when you are supplying power to the hard drive directly and the
other when you are not. My point here is that I believe only one ought
to be connected ????? not both !

I have a 2.5 inch External USB HDD.

it has 1 cable from the enclosure to the PC
at the PC end, it splits into 2 USB plugs
plug into 2 seperate USB ports on the PC
1 for data & power, 1 for extra power if needed.

Sometimes you can get away with plugging in only data/power cable
sometimes you need both

Unfortunately, I've never tried to use it in Linux. (I just got it today
from a friend).

At his place, only needs to plug into 1 USB port

Here, at home, I need both. It depends on the PC

HTH

Al

it depends on the amount of powr the drive uses and how heavy the port is loaded. A port can have a power draw of up to 500 miliamps [total]

I would also think it depends ALOT on the USB port it is plugged into.
not all USB ports are equal...

some 1.1, some 2.0, some high power, some not,,etc for uhci, ehci.....
