The kernel is the operating system, using the long lost technical sense of the term operating system (not the current sense of the term OS, which includes everying including the web-browser). Linux is the kernel, Linux is the operating system. It handles all the low-level hardware access, scheduling of tasks (multi-tasking), memory management, etc. Windoze has a kernel too, but you rarely hear about it, and you certainly are not allowed to modify it like you can with Linux. Sorry, I know nothing about linuxant except I've heard that it takes drivers compiled to run with the windoze OS on intel hardware and does some tricky stuff to make them run with the linux OS on intel hardware.
