--------------------------------- [16] Tord Grip on Becks --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: 'As far as Sven and I are concerned, we see no reason to question Sir Alex's judgment. He is a first class manager who knows what he is doing. 'If David is being rested, it can only be good for England. He's had a hard year with England and Manchester United and the coming one will be even harder, with United's Premiership and Champions League commitments and England's build-up and involvement in the World Cup finals. --------------------------------- [15] Fergie on Becks situation --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: 'David is a very good player and obviously disappointed when he isn't picked,' said the United boss. 'I can understand that and we have discussed it but I have to look at the whole picture. The team has been playing well and winning matches and the performances have been getting stronger. 'Winning is all important and we don't want to break the habit. Under the circumstances it is a little unfair to make changes. There are very difficult choices to be made but I have never been afraid to make them.' --------------------------------- [14] Yorkie latest --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: Interested parties now include the Mackems and Parma --------------------------------- [12] All yesterdays results --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: Barnsley (0)1 - 1(0) Blackburn Rovers Grimsby Town (0)0 - 0(0) York City Leicester City (1)2 - 1(1) Mansfield Town Liverpool (2)3 - 0(0) Birmingham City Man City (1)2 - 0(0) Swindon Town Millwall (1)2 - 1(1) Scunthorpe Utd Newcastle United (1)2 - 0(0) Crystal Palace Norwich (0)0 - 0(0) Chelsea Portsmouth (1)1 - 4(0) Leyton Orient Rotherham Utd (P)P - P(P) Southampton Postponed - due to frozen pitch Sheff Utd (0)1 - 0(0) Nottm Forest Brighton (P)P - P(P) Preston Postponed - due to frozen pitch Southend Utd (P)P - P(P) Tranmere Rovers Postponed - due to frozen pitch Stockport (P)P - P(P) Bolton Wanderers Postponed - due to frozen pitch Stoke City (0)0 - 1(0) Everton Walsall (P)P - P(P) Bradford City Postponed - due to frozen pitch Wimbledon (P)P - P(P) Middlesbrough Postponed - due to frozen pitch Wolverhampton Wanderers (0)0 - 1(0) Gillingham Wycombe Wanderers (P)P - P(P) Fulham Postponed - due to frozen pitch Burnley (2)4 - 1(0) Canvey Island Charlton Athletic (0)2 - 1(1) Blackpool Cheltenham Town (P)P - P(P) Oldham Athletic Postponed - now being played Sun, Jan 6 Coventry City (P)P - P(P) Tottenham Hotspur Postponed - due to frozen pitch Crewe Alexandra (P)P - P(P) Sheff Wed Postponed - due to frozen pitch Dagenham and Redbridge (1)1 - 4(2) Ipswich Town Darlington (P)P - P(P) Peterborough United Postponed - due to frozen pitch Sunderland (1)1 - 2(1) West Bromwich Albion Watford (1)2 - 4(2) Arsenal Wed Dec 19 2001 Dagenham and Redbridge (3)3 - 0(0) Exeter City Tue Dec 18 2001 Bristol Rovers (0)3 - 2(0) Plymouth Argyle Southend Utd (1)2 - 0(0) Chesterfield Wed Dec 12 2001 Stoke City (2)3 - 0(0) Halifax Town Sun Dec 09 2001 Canvey Island (0)1 - 0(0) Northampton Town Sat Dec 08 2001 Exeter City (0)0 - 0(0) Dagenham and Redbridge Leyton Orient (0)2 - 1(1) Lincoln City Macclesfield Town (0)4 - 1(0) Swansea City Mansfield Town (2)4 - 0(0) Huddersfield Town Peterborough United (1)1 - 0(0) Bournemouth Plymouth Argyle (1)1 - 1(0) Bristol Rovers Scunthorpe Utd (2)3 - 2(1) Brentford Swindon Town (1)3 - 2(2) Hereford United Tranmere Rovers (4)6 - 1(0) Carlisle United Wycombe Wanderers (0)3 - 0(0) Notts County York City (2)2 - 0(0) Reading Blackpool (2)2 - 0(0) Rochdale Cardiff City (1)3 - 0(0) Port Vale Chesterfield (0)1 - 1(0) Southend Utd Halifax Town (0)1 - 1(1) Stoke City Hinckley Utd (0)0 - 2(1) Cheltenham Town Hull City (1)2 - 3(1) Oldham Athletic Altrincham (0)1 - 2(1) Darlington Brighton (1)2 - 1(0) Rushden and Diamonds --------------------------------- [11] Sven on Becks --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "David is a quiet shy guy. He is not the prima donna you sometimes read about. He doesn't talk much but when he does, he has something important to say. "He comes first in everything. If it is raining, wet and windy, for him the job has got to be done." --------------------------------- [10] Eriksson doesn't miss club football --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "I don't miss it now - especially not in the summer. It is nice to be able to lie on a couch and do nothing. "As a club coach you have to sit by the phone the whole time and try to buy players. "When I took this job the FA's chief executive Adam Crozier said that the goal was not the 2002 World Cup but 2006. That's when I want a brilliant team. "It doesn't really matter if we don't win this time. And maybe I will become Sir Sven if we win the World Cup! It is possible." --------------------------------- [9] Giggsy on Becks --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "The fact David is the England captain is not lost on him and naturally he fears if the situation continues, his international place might come under threat. "But that won't cut any ice with Sir Alex Ferguson, who firmly believes no player is too big to be dropped. "In a way he is setting David a test of character in how he responds. He does it to us all at one time or another. "You can't have one rule for Beckham and expect the others to live by another just because he happens to be captain of England. "No player is happy sitting on the bench and when you are David Beckham it juts makes it twice as bad. "He is not happy for the simple reason that he wants to be involved and to suggest anything else would be to do him a disservice. "If I was David I would be frustrated to the point of wanting to kick down my front door and, while the signs of frustration are evident, he's far too professional to allow himself to be distracted from setting out to regain his place in the team." --------------------------------- [8] All our yesterdays --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: Us against Villa in the Cup. From BBC: Between them, Aston Villa and Manchester United have played in 25 FA Cup Finals and have won the competition 17 times. The last of Villa's seven successes was against United 25 years ago. This is the ninth time these clubs have been drawn together in the competition. All previous eight ties have been resolved at the first time of asking - United leading by six wins to two. United were drawn at home in the first occasion in 1906 and won the Third Round tie 5-1. Ten goals were scored in the Third Round meeting at Aston Villa in 1948 when United ran out 6-4 victors. Villa's 2-1 success in the 1957 Wembley showpiece Final was Sir Matt Busby's first FA Cup final and the 'Busby babes' last Cup Final. 24 Feb 1906 R3 Manchester U 5-1 Aston Villa 22 Feb 1908 R3 Aston Villa 0-2 Manchester U 4 Feb 1911 R2 Manchester U 2-1 Aston Villa 31 Jan 1920 R2 Manchester U 1-2 Aston Villa 10 Jan 1938 R3 Aston Villa 4-6 Manchester U 4 May 1957 FNL Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester U 11 Mar 1963 R4 Manchester U 1-0 Aston Villa 19 Mar 1977 QF Manchester U 2-1 Aston Villa --------------------------------- [7] Nicky Butt: FA Cup still important to us --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "People always talk about us and the FA Cup, but it is so important to the players in the changing rooms," he said on MUTV. "You can't really explain it all - there's such a history behind the cup. "It's there for all to see, and we love it. You ask the lads in the changing room about how they feel about the FA Cup final in May. "It's such a big day and a one-off game, and we have been fortunate enough to experience it a few times." --------------------------------- [6] Ginger Prince on today --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "The FA Cup is a big tournament, and we want to win that as much as we want to win any other tournament really." "We're a bit more confident, while they have dipped a little bit in the past few weeks," he said. "But we still know that they're a good team and they've got a lot of good players. "We probably could not have asked for a more difficult tie in the third round, but if we're going to win the cup we have to beat these teams. "You would like a home tie, but I think we're capable of beating anyone home or away anyway." --------------------------------- [5] Di Canio on Becks --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "I don't think he needs to go abroad. "If he wants a new cultural or footballing experience then that's his choice, but if I was him, I'd never change - I would never leave Manchester United. "I hope and pray for the sake of the English game that Beckham continues to play his football here." --------------------------------- [4] Di Canio on move --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "Of course, everybody should feel very good when you listen to good words from Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the best managers in the world," he said. "We are talking about the best team - alongside Real Madrid in my opinion - in the world. Playing for them has to be fantastic. "You have to be happy because the people recognise the job you do and that you are a talent and a character and a personality for playing at the top level. "So this makes me very happy, it gives me a big satisfaction because this has confirmed that - apart from the problem I had with Paul Alcock - I did a great job in England." --------------------------------- [3] Peter on our form --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "You never put that sort of thing past them. Once they get it right then they really get it right. "I know they have lost more games at this stage than they've ever done, more than any team has done if they are going to win the title. But they can go on the sort of run that will put them right in contention." --------------------------------- [2] Peter on today's game --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "We've got an easy draw in the third round. We're virtually in the next round already!" he joked. "But in all seriousness I don't think the draw we've got is necessarily a bad thing rather than, for instance, playing someone like Darlington. "In those sort of ties, you don't know what you are up against; you don't know the players - and if they play a team like Aston Villa you can bet your life that they'll be twice as good as they normally are. "I've been through a lot of games like that, most famously when York beat us United fair and square in the Worthington Cup but were also relegated that year. You can be taken by surprise by these teams. "When you play Manchester United you know exactly what you are up against, and at certain times it can work to your advantage. I don't think anyone wins the FA Cup by having easy draws." --------------------------------- [1] Peter on Villa --------------------------------- Posted Sunday, January 6, 2002 by tb: "We are very disappointed with what we have achieved since being top, but I think that is down to having inexperience of having success and being the top team. "Once you are up there everyone wants to beat you, and we've not really been able to cope with that. Since being top, we have won only once. "It's not as if we feel we are in a deep crisis, and we are quite confident that our start to the season wasn't a fluke. That was the quality we can deliver." "We're not ready enough or good enough yet to start thinking about the title," he said. "Everyone knows that, so it is not even an issue. "I also think it's wrong to go out and say 'We'll be in the Champions League' because that is so difficult to achieve. If we can qualify for Europe then I think we will have done very well. "But to have a good cup run is also very important to the club. The FA Cup is our chance of silverware, and everyone at the club shares that opinion with me. "We want to win silverware. We've only got this one opportunity left, and you are going to see Aston Villa really try to do that." --------------------------------- [13] Match stats & preview --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, January 5, 2002 by redend: One for the anorak and wax crayon sniffers: Don't forget that all the Villa match preview stats and odds are covered in Friday and Saturday's news below (items Friday [20] - [27] & [49] - [52] and Saturday [1], [11], [12]). --------------------------------- [12] Sporting Odds Match Preview --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, January 5, 2002 by redend: http://www.sportingodds.co.uk/adserver/scripts/ict.dll?click?rnews0 Sporting Odds Preview of Villa FA Cup match. Can Ferguson bow out by steering Utd to what would be a sixth Cup final appearance under his guidance? They set the ball rolling on Sunday. Sunday's match - one of two all-Premiership clashes - is arguably the pick of this weekend's third round action. Doubtless Villa boss, John Gregory, will feel a little aggrieved that his side somehow managed to avoid the many lesser clubs in the competition, especially at a time when Manchester United are in the midst of an irrepressible run of form. If confidence alone could win games, United would already be in the hat for the fourth round draw. Aston Villa were unfortunate to concede an equaliser late in injury time against them in the Premiership back in August but Sunday's opponents have since rediscovered their spark, and worryingly for Gregory, Villa's season is beginning to falter. They need to put a disappointing spell in the league behind them which has seen them collect just two points from a possible twelve over the Christmas period. A good run in the Cup - which they haven't won since 1957 when beating none other than Manchester United - looks a big ask... --------------------------------- [11] Other bets from ... --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, January 5, 2002 by redend: ... http://www.sportingodds.co.uk/adserver/scripts/ict.dll?click?rnews0 Sporting Odds Aggregate Goalscorers Shirt Numbers Under 27 6/4 27-43 15/8 Over 43 7/4 90 Minutes Only.
