--------------------------------- [27] Di Canio on his sending off --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "Perhaps this will end all the speculation. Maybe Manchester United will not want to buy me, even for £1. It could not have been a worse day for me. It was a silly reaction. Morris came in with both feet and the same thing had happened five minutes earlier to Trevor Sinclair and he has had six stitches in his ankle. But I can't go around trampling people like this. It was silly and today was not my best and afterwards I said sorry. But at least it shows I am thinking only about West Ham. If my mind was thinking about another club then, at 3-0 down, I would not have reacted so passionately. Maybe I should have been given a free-kick for the tackle from Morris. But the referee was very, very hard today." --------------------------------- [26] Another Red song --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: Vieira Whoa........... Vieira Whoa............ For 50 million quid, he's off to Real Madrid. from Chas --------------------------------- [25] Now that's what we call loyalty --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: Scousers booed their team off on Saturday. Phil Honkson said: "The fans made their feelings known. The crowd often tell you the way your team has played. They can be harsh - but we were extremely poor. It's not nice to hear, but we can't have any complaints. It was a very disappointing performance to say the least." --------------------------------- [24] Posh on Footballers Wives show --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "I was watching Footballers' Wives and there's a couple in there that are meant to be me and David. This girl is doing this modelling and her boyfriend pulls up in some flashy convertible and she comes out with her Louis Vuitton luggage. She says 'Oh I love you babe, we are so rich, this is so fabulous.' But it's not like that. We argue over the remote control." --------------------------------- [23] Does this include Viduka, Bowyer... --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: O'Dreary "If players can't behave properly, they are a liability and you have to move them on. I have already told them what I mean. Believe me, they have got the message. Without a doubt, these players are putting their careers at risk if they continue to misbehave." --------------------------------- [22] United team from Saturday --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: Fabien Barthez, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Laurent Blanc, Mickael Silvestre (Denis Irwin, 45), David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Juan Veron (Nicky Butt, 84), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Ryan Giggs, 55), Ruud van Nistelrooy --------------------------------- [21] Fergie on Veron talk --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "As far as I am concerned all this talk is speculation and without foundation, although it is very disturbing nonetheless. But whenever I have spoken to Seba he has told me he is very happy at Manchester United and that he wants to stay at this club. He has told me he doesn't want to play for any other club." --------------------------------- [20] Intelligence test --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: >From martin 'Forgive my sin but I was browsing the Official Scouse site for their take on the Forlan deal and Tuesday's match when I came across this gem. "..... giving away three pairs of tickets for the Premiership clash with Leicester City on January 30th at Anfield. Simply answer the following multiple choice question correctly: Which Liverpool striker used to play for Leicester?" Multiple choice huh?' --------------------------------- [19] Let's just hope --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: that the much pointed out resemblance between karel Poborksy and our new signing is only in the hair department! --------------------------------- [18] A Red Perspective --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: from Martin 'Sorry for the lack of news from Dublin lately but it seems that Eamonn Dunphy's Last Word programme, like the rest of the Premiership sideliners, had written us off and thus relegated any talk of United to the wrap-up minutes. But that's to be expected with pundits such as Giles and Lawrenson. Brilliant though they are as readers. The old allegiance never dies! Dunphy however is black and white. If a player is good then he's good. If he's shite then he's shite. Good reason to look forward to his Biog of Keano. Although this is a pundit who once described Michel Platini as "not a great player" two weeks before Platini single handedly won the 1984 European Championship. And I was there to see it. May also be worth noting that Dunphy's opinion on Keano's ommission from the UEFA and FIFA player of the year shortlist is unprintable. (Yes, he says it on radio and he gets away with it!) For what it's worth the best quote of the evening was from Lawrenson. Talking about Danny Mills' imminent suspension he replied, "It'll give him a couple of weeks to get a lobotomy". --------------------------------- [17] More from Veron --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "I had a good start here at Old Trafford but things did then dip and level out. I have a lot more to offer. I know I can get better and I will be doing my very best to improve. Everyone at the club has done everything they can to help me settle. The people in this country have treated me really, really well. But it has taken me longer to adapt to English football than I expected and longer than when I moved to Italy from Argentina. It has been a huge change this time, not only from a footballing point of view but generally in life. Football-wise, the training and style of play are different to Serie A. There are lots of things you have to adapt to. But I knew that before I came so it is no surprise and that's what I wanted to experience. As a player you grow in stature with the different types of experiences you have in football. Italy helped me a lot as is England now. I will become a better player for being over here. I have every intention of completing my five-year contract here at Manchester United. I'm very, very happy." --------------------------------- [16] Veron Lazio denails in full --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "I am satisfied with what I have done so far but I know I have a lot more in myself to give and that's what I am trying to do. I am very happy at Manchester United. The thought of leaving has never entered my head. I want to clear that up right away. I will be redoubling my efforts to make a big impact for the rest of the season. I hope the Manchester United fans will get more of a chance to see the type of things I did in Italy over the next weeks and months." --------------------------------- [15] Fergie on the penalty --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "It's a marvellous achievement to score in eight games in a row. He's in great form. I always feel if he gets a chance he will score. I think David was going to take it, but the fact that Ruud was going for the record, David decided to let him have it." --------------------------------- [14] Ruud on taking penalty ahead of Becks --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "He looked at me and said 'Ruud if you want to take it, take it'. I didn't hesitate and I took it. First of all it was a very important moment just before half-time and I had missed my last penalty against Olympiakos. So for me it was a tough one to take, but I concentrated well. I put the ball a few times on the spot, but in the end it went in the back of the net and I was very pleased." --------------------------------- [13] Ruud on record --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "You see the names who are there on seven and I can be very proud that I've broken it." --------------------------------- [12] Ayala quotes --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: Roberto Ayala: "United made their offer, I am happy, they are happy and it is up to Valencia to accept it. United are interested in me and I am very interested in joining them. It is up to the clubs now. My agent had an offer in his hand faxed from United in the summer but Valencia would not let me leave. That offer was a good one and I am told the offer still stands. I can do nothing until Valencia agree to sell, but I love the idea." --------------------------------- [11] Seems as Boro lost out --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: to us on Forlan, they now have that money to spend and are looking at signing - if he drops his high wage request - Dwight. --------------------------------- [10] Another song... --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: >From David A song for the new boy, to the tune of the banana boat song Diego Diego Forlan comes and he scores our goals --------------------------------- [9] Fergie to MUTV after Blackburn game --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: from the official site Opposition "They made it tough for us. It was a very open game. It was end to end, and credit to Blackburn, they gave it a go." Ruud's record "Everyone's pleased for him. It's a marvellous performance to score in eight games in a row in our league, amazing." Disputed penalty "I haven't seen the penalty incident since on video, but it looked like it was a penalty to me at the time. But the referee took so long about it, he put everyone's mind in doubt. He deliberated, he waited, I don't know what he was doing to be honest with you. But eventually he gave it." Blackburn comeback "They adapted their game after they scored. Credit to them, they got the bit between their teeth and I thought they were the better side in the second half." Late winner "We always keep going, don't we? We always chase it, we're always capable of scoring goals in the last minutes." Title talk "I'm not getting into that. We've got a big job to do. We know that we've already lost six games this season and if we lose another one then we've got no chance." Diego Forlan "He'll be having a medical on Monday. I think all the papers have been agreed. We're just checking his passport details and once those have been established, then we'll have him registered by the end of the week." Other signings "We don't know what's happening at the moment, we'll just have to wait and see." --------------------------------- [8] Another song of the day --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Tufty to tune of Tom Jones Delialah "My My My Diego, Score, score, score Diego He's Urugyan with flare, He don't like the Middlesborough air, so give me Diego and Borougg can have Dwight Yorke!" Ok, I'll get my coat!! --------------------------------- [7] Song of the day --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: *(Bread of Heaven) To be sung to all the fading rivals......... Shall we win, Shall we win, Shall we win the League for you, Shall we win the League for you? >From Neil --------------------------------- [6] IMUSA try to get more tickets for Boro --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: And Paddy Harverson's programme notes didn't discount the possibility of getting more tickets, even at this late stage... >From Ananova 'United fans press cup ticket claim Manchester United fans have taken legal advice over what they claim is an unfair reduction in the ticket allocation for the FA Cup tie at Middlesbrough on January 26. The Independent Manchester United Supporters Association could take court action to seek a judicial review of the decision by Middlesbrough's local authority not to offer the full 15% allocation determined under the rules of the competition. United received a reduced allocation of around 1000 tickets for the Barclaycard Premiership game at the Riverside in December because of problems over supporters standing up during previous games on Teesside. IMUSA claim the fans were praised for their behaviour during the 1-0 win and were subsequently told the allocation for the FA Cup fourth-round game would be increased. But United have been given only 2400 - some 3,000 short of what they are entitled to under Football Association rules - and IMUSA are refusing to let the matter rest. IMUSA press officer Jules Spencer said: "We are concerned that local authorities can make biased judgements. "Since the announcement was made, IMUSA have made representations to the relevant bodies with little joy, therefore it would seam reasonable to explore alternative avenues." --------------------------------- [5] Forlan on Fergie --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: "Ferguson has incredible humility. Once he had been told that the transfer was done, he waited for me then showed me round the club and the city. He showed me the training camp and the neighbourhood where Veron lives. He told me that he would prefer me to live near Veron, so that we can go to training sessions together. I will never forget Independiente. When I went to Argentina from Uruguay I remember that I had to live alone in the club's hotel. After that, Independiente gave me my first apartment and then a place of importance in this sport." --------------------------------- [4] Forlan to have medical today --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: Diego Forlan "It's a dream having the chance to play here and even having [midfielder Juan Sebastien] Veron in the team This looks like a shopping mall, there is so much merchandise. Even the chairs in the bars are painted with United shirts with a number on each one." --------------------------------- [3] Red Perspective --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: This 'believe' campaign seems to have been timed to perfection on the site. We said don't give up hope after West Ham and subsequent results have better than we could have hoped or dreamed. The big tests however are still to come - starting with Tuesday. It promises to be a cracker as every Red seems to be up for it - one hell of an atmosphere we hope. But our attention is on another subject. Sabre Veron. Certainly the quotes - whether intrepreted incorrectly or not at source - that came out on Friday did him no good and we're not going to deny he had a stinker on Saturday - a dreadful individual display which seems to have typified recent performances. Giving the ball away and despite some great long ball passes a reluctance to, well, get stuck in. But he started well and we do believe a player who will get as many plaudits as any this summer at the World Cup, if he does commit himself to Utd long term will be a star at Old Trafford. But he does need to confirm with certainty that he is going to stay at United and not sod off to Lazio. Also as with others attention needs to be shifted from thoughts about the World Cup into 100% effort for United...and once the season ends then worry about the national side. But saying that we were disturbed by some of the abuse levelled at him on Saturday. It isn't going to do him, the team or our chances any good to single him out - the comments on Friday were ill-timed but there seemed an air of Mikael against Kiev type criticisms against Sabre - which we hope is just a one off. Mikael HAS, despite lapses, come on leaps and bounds, perhaps a rest may do Veron the world of good. Or maybe Fergie's as ever loyalty to his player by not foresaking him during a bad patch. But I can't see how increasing frustration being vented at any mistakes can do any good. He's not playing well - but let's show him how much classier we are than Lazio fans and start supporting him in what is, I suppose, some sort of hour of need. Then there surely wouldn't be any question of leaving the greatest club in the world and instead finding that the grass is never greener. --------------------------------- [2] Those Sunday tabloid rumours --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 21, 2002 by bar-knee: John O'Shea and Michael Stewart have signed new 4 year deals.
