Actually, cleaning out a mess like that is a hazard. One of the fools that
works in the PE division opened up a fan shroud on a riding mower and used an
air gun to blow it off... three days in the hospital from the respiratory
infection. Finding dead critters is fun too. Stuff stored in outside sheds are
prone to this.. bikes too.

corn? maybe the critters were getting ready to put it on the exhaust pipes
after a ride to make popcorn!

Sounds like a critter moved in... happens a lot. I opened up a Wing air box
once that was full of corn... K&N's are pricey, shop around.

Ahh ok, i guess i better buy a new one for my bike then because i took it out
to inspect it and there was leaves and a bunch of other debree in it ( the big
stuff all came out with tapping on it and pulling it out by hand but its not
100% clean)I read about people putting K&N filters oninstead of the OEM filters
, are they alot better ? do they make them for the NH 650 ?where would the
cheapest place to get them be? we are on VERY limited (next to none) income is
why i ask that

If you can't see light through it, replace it. Just like any car filter.
Cleanable ? no.

How often do the original type (U shaped) filters have to be changed or are
they cleanable.. and if cleanable how? Also i have a couple pics of the '85 NH i
bought and would like to have them put on the group home page... how do i get
them put on there?

No, at first. It becomes an asset later. The K&N is cone shaped and installed,
the small end is down. That should make you wonder.
FYI: the original is a paper pleated that is "U" shaped.

Dennis,
Your question piqued my curiosity.  Does the shape of the filter make a
difference in the performance?

Thanks again for your patience...

these have enricheners and not chokes, you can add some choke to make it run
richer. Now if that helps, increase the main jets to 120. You don't specify if
the stumble is just that or it is popping. ?? A pop is a good indication of
lean. If it truly is that lean, you could'nt get it to go above 5k at all.
Getting it up there slowly means to me (IMHO) that the air speed is too slow to
pick off fuel. That's where the choke addition comes in. If that makes it
worse, let me know. A high air flow filter actually causes a slowing of the
flow. Untill they repeal the laws of physics (Obama just might) high speed air
works best. You do have the lid on the air box ? With the snorkle ? I hope so.
A complete air box is vital.
