Yeah, well, Microsoft has certainly done this. IM and (internal) voice calling used to be part of Exchange. Now it's a separate product, separately licensed (lots more features though).
ACS (Audit Collection System) used to be a standalone product (well, never released, but it was beta-tested as a standalone), now it's merged with SCCM. Mobile Device Manager has been through four or five iterations at this point, both as separate and merged products. Most recently, it's part of SCCM 2012. Except for Hyper-V and Virtual PC/Server (maybe those too, but I'm not aware of it) Microsoft bought up all the companies that produced its virtualization technologies and the originals are history.
