Are you backing up SQL and /or Exchange and are you quiescing your
snapshots?

I've set up some backup scripts to make my own VCB backups.  It was
pretty painless.
I'm by no means a script expert either.

Yes, all third party products use VCB, however, VCB by itself is a
little more difficult to setup. The third party product eliminates
having to do all of the custom scripting.

vRanger uses VCB.  IIRC, all third party backup solutions for VM's
require VCB.
