i had some bad experience with dell (bad service) and sony (to fragile to carry this expensive thing it around). my mother still used my 2001 acer until the harddisk died a few months ago. i would choose between acer (cheaper, but the keyboard on my '04 Aspire was crap) or an IBM thinkpad (more expensive, but better quality.)
