Has anyone identified the problem that this vote has been identified to
fix?

If the vote is to cut back on the personal attacks that have been
appearing from non-members, am I safe to assume that the price of
personal attacks is set at approx. $40/yr. Does membership in a club
give you the right to make personal attacks on the listserv? It would
seem that is what is being implied here. Again, the problem has not been
identified, so it's hard to understand what this solution is set to
remedy.

I would certainly vote to keep the list open, as I would hope that the
club is trying to promote cycling in general and to provide a means for
providing information. If I want to know which store in Ottawa carries a
particular part, or who has had GPS on a bike experience, I really don't
care if the person who provides the information is an OBC card carrying
member. If someone posts information about the parkway being open or
closed for the season, I don't care if they know how to spell OBC. If
there is a post about a website up that a non obc member put up about
their rideau lakes experience, do I care who really posted this
information. Yes, membership does have it's privileges, but censorship
wasn't in the last notice that I got with my OBC renewal.

Now, a few questions come to mind here with regards to the original
email.

1) Has there been an issue addressed with the integrity of the
information being posted? Have people really been posting incorrect
dates for the next Rideau Lakes to deter others from going. I would
think that postings such as the date for the next Rideau Lakes, or the
next Learn to Race clinic would be beneficial to a larger audience than
just those who paid up this year. Or are we trying to hide that type of
information?

2) Who will decide at the club office or at this email address whether a
posting from a non member warrants posting? This now puts added
responsibility and duties on individuals to monitor this. Do those
individuals realize this impact?

3) If new subscribers will need to be approved by the list
administrator, what is the criteria for being approved for the list?

4) How are posters being asked to identify themselves? Do they need to
submit a OBC membership number with their posting?

I'm all for sorting the wheat from the chaff and getting the signal to
noise ratio a little higher in this list, but let's first understand
what these dictated changes are meant to address. There have been some
very good points made in response to these changes, and I would suggest
that the board rethink its position and make it based upon the
membership that it is trying to represent, not because a non member has
a different opinion than someone on the board.

Am I an obc member? If you ask me if I'm a member of the OBC, I'll deny
my affiliation with the club, but I've been paying dues for over 12
years.
