Hi,

Development machine can be quite basic but it must be capable of running
your app and the IDE at the same time so to reduce swapping ram to hard disk
a health amount of ram is a must. Also remember that XP loves ram.

But look carefully at what spec ram is fitted and if the motherboard is
configured to make the most of it. ( Most used the safest setting available
therefore slowest settings for 200% reliability when all you wanted was
100%)

Test the ram extensively before using in production - check out
www.simmtester.com for docmemory software for testing of ram. Unreliable ram
can appear as an unreliable hard disk and is hard to find.

Another major bottle neck is the hard disk so large cache (8meg+) and fast
(7200rpm+) is the order of the day.

For hardware comparisons check out www.tomshardware.com for good reviews.

AMD gives more bang for buck, but if the processor loses cooling it is
toast- where Intel will live another day.

Chasing performance when sound is used a lot, look at a card with a sound
processor on it (i.e. genius live 5.1 for less than $50, whose to complain).

Power supply is critical unless you have a UPS. Enermax is good if you
don't.

my 2 cents worth
Maurice

Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: Specs for development Machine

It's a bit quiet out there.

I'm in line for a hardware upgrade and would be interested in people's
opinions.

Assuming you're paying for it yourself and this is a machine that will be
used
primarily for development - what do people consider to be the most important
specs? ie giving the most bangs for bucks. - and why!

I already have a Phillips 109S monitor, so don't talk about that (although
I'm sure
someone will poiint out how much better a 17" LCD would be!).

If any one can recommend a video card that provides exceptional clarity,
that would
be good.

All responses will be most carefully considered.

TIA

Mark
