A small counterpoint:
> Local small print shop will be happy to run this job for you.
I strongly recommend that would-be publishers look outside their local area
for printers who specialize in short run book printing. In my experience,
most local printers are not very competitive on price for the kinds of
things RPG companies publish; they don't sufficiently specialize in this
kind of job, but probably do a wide range of things for a diverse set of
clients (annual reports for one company, direct mail flyers for another,
maybe letterhead--who knows?). On the other hand, on a national level there
are printers who specialize in small press book publishing, and can easily
save you up to 50% over what you would spend printing locally -- more than
enough to cover the shipping bill from out of state.
Get prices locally (after all, one of your local printers might be the right
kind of specialist), but look further afield as well.
