Always important, but could be served better if the person doing the
advertising
is setting the precedence of contributing (more than as just a side benefit)

the Open Gaming Community. >>

Agreed. Just as (in my opinion), Indian food is better than Mediterranean
food. But I'll eat either one until I explode, because both are fantastic.
(Just got back from an Indian restauarant where the dinner for four was well
more than twice what the four of us could eat. Yummm...)

If you want to talk about how the gaming community receives MORE benefit, we
have an entirely different discussion, and no disagreement. The problem
comes in when some on the list choose to pretend that there is no benefit
from actions that happen not to fit their ideologies, and therefore feel
justified in being uncivil and insulting in an effort to either force all to
march in lock step with their prejudices or to drive away those who will
not. And because you happen to share their ideologies -- which is entirely
your right -- I fear you are unwittingly furthering their agenda of bullying
and insults.

Again, all other things being equal: the former is falafel and hummous; the
latter is naan and tandoori and naan and curry and naan and lassi and naan
and... One is delightful, and the other is delightful beyond description.
But that does not mean that the lesser good thing is a bad thing.
