Me too, I was told any aarch64 work should be based on that refactoring,
so I went ahead and updated it after months of inactivity, in particular
fixing some endianness bugs.

I also changed the naming and would appreciate feedback from anyone on
whether I should change that again or go ahead and propagate that to
more parts of code (e.g., gdb, flash drivers) and rebase any of the
aarch64 or mips64 patches on top.
