Relying on compile-time options is not really the best, since binaries
can be transported between the different Windows variants (and if you
look at the code, we've definitely made it more and more dynamic in
that sense).

So, is there a dynamic way to solve the problem?  And sorry for asking
this (I get too much mail, so I sometimes miss some...), but have you
sent a compile log showing exactly what goes wrong?  I've no Mingw32
and I prefer not to play too much with Windows, but I have been able
to deduce what needs to be done by looking at compile logs...
