I set up MythTV on a lark a few months ago, mostly because I wanted to
play with pausing live TV. I was soon totally addicted. It's
completely changed how I watch TV; I hardly ever watch anything "live"
anymore, I just let the scheduler record what I want so I can watch it
at my leisure. It's great.

I fear that a lot of pain is coming my way with the looming digital
conversion, though. It's mandatory for broadcast in 2009 and some cable
companies are converting sooner. From reading the mythtv mailing list
it seems recording HDTV is a hit-or-miss proposal, especially off cable.
