I'm a bit late to the party, but to chime in:

I LOVE the musical analogy to folding, both in process and finished
composition.
I also fondly recall my visual arts training at MICA and the "composition"
of those visual pieces.
Having said that, I generally gravitate toward "design" and prefer these
general distinctions:

original designer = designer/creator/composer

original design = design/composition

secondary folder = artist/folder

secondary design = piece/model/fold


And bottom line... it "is" art, ambiguous by nature, and consequently free.
There's nothing wrong with seeing, experiencing, and learning about a piece
to determine its true nature.
