Ah--it's old VW reminiscing time. Bought my first car for $1700, a new '57 VW Bug--in '57, of course. My new wife and I loved it, but it was not a good car for camping, so in a year we traded it in for new '58 VW Microbus. Paid $2800. Drove that thing for 15 years and about 250,000 miles, periodically dropping the engine, taking it into the house, and rebuilding it. The last time it quit on us we said enough is enough. Sold it, not running, to a kid for $500.
Now we call them the "good old days". Then we called them "these trying times."
