I am typing this on a 5215 with a 5300 motherboard (64Meg,
94Mhz, OS9), but I am using an ethernet/broadband connection with an
ethernet card I picked up somewhere. With regard to the issue of the
hardware handshaking of the 5200s, I cannot remember how this was
solved way back when we first heard of the issue. One way I am
pretty sure of, is to get a global village modem and use the global
village software. As I recall, GV solves the problem by controlling
the modem through the GV software. Global village made those
internal modems and so maybe they were prepared early for the problem
of replacing them.
But my secretary took this machine home and used it with a
best data 33kbs modem. In fact I was just using it with a BD a
month or 2 ago as I was going to use it with some telephonic software
that didn't like the computer. (maybe it was the handshaking).
I am wondering if Apple solved this modem problem with open
transport or later system software (they shipped the computer before
OS 7.6). Or maybe it was the GV software with the BD modem. I just
can't remember this stuff.
I like the computer, it's monitor, and its case and so forth
but it has real speed problems. When we got this thing in 96, I was
blown away with the speed of the thing, but now, file transfers are
like molasses and just moving the mouse causes file transfers to
grind to a halt. (so don't move the mouse-ha,ha). I saw some guy
in Columbus Ohio couldn't sell his 5400s for $90 on eBay--and 5400s
are a LOT better than 5200s. I saw a bulk offer of 82*5400s for $32
each. This being the case, I am not sure about the value of lots of
pain getting a 5200 surfing.
Can anyone remember how to solve the 5200 modem problem?
