Any chance you have something plugged into the RCA video out port? 
If so you may have a video display going out on that port and if it's 
the main screen, that would be where all your stuff is.  The computer 
senses the connection of a display (or something) and makes it a 
video display.  It takes a restart to make a change.

Of the desktop area you can see on the screen is it all there with a 
black band all around?  If it isn't then the display is probably 
either operating in the wrong mode or the controls need to be 
adjusted.

You use the power switch to turn off the multiscan display.
