I had exactly the same problem with my 8500 - the computer's vram
thought that it was driving both a monitor and a TV in my case - both
devices showed up in the monitors control panel. Put a pci graphics card
in and it went away.
The fix was very simple - the 4x1MB sticks of vram have to be
installed in matching paired slots on the mobo.
My 8600 also had vram in unmatched slots when I got it - someone had
taken the top two out - but instead of mirroring I got the breaking glass
sound and no startup until I paired the sticks.

     Pete
