In fact, Zip drives are becoming a rarity. And if you think they're tough you
never got a click-o death Zip. In my experience Zip drives are mildly more
reliable than floppy disks. (Syquest's EZ-Drive 135 MB disks were much faster
and
more reliable, if less well known and advertised. Zip drives are a monument to
'mediocrity, well advertised'triumphing over technical superiority.) >>

Agreed; still many of my clients supply files on Zip's. So I need the Zip
250/100 drives to read their files.

As far as the SyQuest EZ 135's I wholeheartedly agree. They are built like a
tank and I still have some in daily use.

If anyone ever has the opportunity to take a zip drive and a SyQuest EZ 135
apart you will see the difference in quality. Not recommended unless you are
doing an autopsy on a dead drives. Both can be problematic to reassemble.

Iomega created the ZIP to compete with the SyQuest removable drives. Iomega
had their Bernoulli drives which had far superior technology but were losing
market share the SyQuest big 5 1/4 inch removable carts that dominated the
graphics arts industry in the 90's. Then SyQuest came out with smaller the EZ
135
cart. And then Iomega created the ZIP.

I remember (forgot the year) at MacWorld Expo in Boston that Iomega had a
huge banner draped 3 stories down the side of the exhibition hall to introduce
the ZIP drive. Since most of my clients had SyQuest drives I bought the EZ 135.
Next thing I knew everyone bought into ZIP drives. At the time I thought that
was a bad call. Now I really appreciate the EZ 135.

Then SyQuest shot themselves in the foot with their larger drives most
notably the SparQ 1 GB which had many failures and to a lesser extent the SyJet
1.5
GB both can create a hardware condition somewhat similar to a virus where a
drive can destroy a cart; then the damaged cart if inserted into a good drive
would destroy the drive -- very nasty.

I still have a button (the kind you pin on your shirt) from likely the last
SyQuest trade show booth at the New York Macworld Expo that proclaims "Thing
Gig" promoting their SparQ drive -- kind of a joke now.

Meanwhile Iomgea moved on to the 1GB and 2 GB Jaz Drives which some users
find quite reliable.

Probably more trivia on ZIP's and EZ drives than you ever wanted to know
