Not sure of the biggest HD, but I put a 20GB one in (from a Cube, which is now 120GB). I think on the 5500's ATA66 bus it's 137GB max. You probably need to make sure whatever you put in won't over-heat, though, and make sure the jumpers are set to allow eveything above 20GB to be seen by the Mac. I'm sure someone else on this list can be more precise.

Never heard of OS X going into a 5500, even with a G3 CPU upgrade in the cache slot.
