Unfortunately, you can't. I had a 5400, same thing pretty much, also
listed as 'unsupported', but I tried to get jaguar working on it

That is simply untrue. XPostFacto has supported the 5500 with a G3 L2 upgrade for some time and the lastest release (alpha) even supports the 5500 with the 603 processor.

anyways. I believe there are issues with the CD-ROM drive and getting
it to boot. As far as I know, the 5400 and 5500 aren't even supported
for Linux or any BSD variants. Generally, if none of the 'free' unixes

Again that is not true. YellowDog Linux release 2 and 3 install with little effort. The lasted release of Ubuntu can be installed with a bit more effort. BeOS also runs native on the 5500. All in all it is a very versatile machine from an OS stand point.

run on a Mac, it won't be possible to get OS X to run on it. Kind of
stinks, because it would be a good 'almost G3 all-in-one' computer,
especially with an upgrade card. The limited RAM, unaccelerated video,
and single PCI slot would always be a factor though, even if you were
able to get OS X working. If you want to try anyways, good luck! It's
always fun to see what you can get working on machines that weren't
designed for it! :)

You are correct that the machine does have draw backs for running the latest OS versions. The biggest limitation is the ceiling of 128MB of RAM. I expect the slow hard drive and old video would also be obstacles to good performance.

Wow , someone on the Powerbooks site posted a URL to a site which
explains how to install OS X on an XBox.

So putting it on a 5500 should be child's play by comparison.
