Just a point on Ethernet, the Comm II slot in the 5500 takes either an
Ethernet card or the 32k modem. Yoy can sometimes find these on eBay
(for 15 to 20) as I did my current Ethernet card.

Unfortunately, you can't. I had a 5400, same thing pretty much, also
listed as 'unsupported', but I tried to get jaguar working on it
That is simply untrue. XPostFacto has supported the 5500 with a G3 L2
upgrade for some time and the lastest release (alpha) even supports
the
5500 with the 603 processor.
On XPostFacto's Compatability page, the following is listed for 5400,
5500, 6300, 6360, 6400, and 6500:
Unsupported, but in progress. The main problem is that SCSI and
Ethernet are not working, which makes installation difficult. Also,
will not work with Mac OS X 10.2 or later, because of 603 CPU.
Now if you had a G3, you'd be technically capable of making it run.
But without ethernet (unless you use the 1 onboard PCI slot for it or
wireless), you won't get much too useful done in OS X, and the SCSI
problem is what prevents the CD-ROM drive from working. If you could
get an IDE CD-ROM in there somehow (not sure because of the weird
cabling on the inside), MAYBE it would work. And yeah, unfortunately
the most RAM it can have is something weird like 136mb (2 64mb chips
plus 8mb onboard) or something around there, and OS X wouldn't be that
quick.
As for Linux, it didn't work at the time I last checked (last year).
That may have changed, but since I have sold my 5400 and now use a
9500 with 10.3.8, I haven't looked into it recently.
Of course, I would try anyways :). It's a nice machine, and it's
always fun to try to make it do something unsupported. I just ruined
a G3 all-in-one trying to hack the internal monitor to use a new PCI
video card (almost had it working, but shorted something and killed
the motherboard), but it was a fun adventure, so no loss.
