When I had less than 100 MB of physical RAM I used VM a lot. And I
had the finder memory allocation at default setting.
I got tired very fast hearing the HD grind constantly.
Physical RAM does not cost enough anymore to make that an excuse for
putting up with really annoying things like the slowdown when VM is
accessing and retrieving. or the constant grinding.
I got some more RAM in all of my Macs and never looked back. And have
thanked myself since.
Ram Doubler is so antiquated in concept it hardly seems worth
mentioning. The last I used it much was on an LC II '020 machine. And
it did not work that well then under OS 7.53.
There is plenty of cheap RAM out there new and used. I highly
recommend it's acquisition. But try to get it all at the same speed
and size.
