On my systems, the drives are at 0 and 1, with CD-ROM's at 3...so, I guess, 
they are in the middle.  The external ones I am using, are 5 and 6, and 
terminated with a centronics-50 terminator plug, outside the case.  I don't 
know if if it is an active terminator or not.  I just know that it hasn't been 
a problem.

So, if you know you have to jumper something, and you know where the jumpers 
are, then do it.  It sounds like you might have to try a terminated cable, if 
you run into problems...if you can't terminate them on the drive.
