I have an "old" Linksys router with 4 ports which feeds a 4 port 10/100 switch and a Graphite Airport base station. I have OS 9 on most machines, but have no problems running systems down to 7.1 on the network. Just ignore most of what the Verizon folks say and you will be OK!
