As others have said, get a router. They are cheap and server
as a good "firewall."

I have an "old" Linksys router with 4 ports which feeds a
4 port 10/100 switch and a Graphite Airport base station.

I have OS 9 on most machines, but have no problems running
systems down to 7.1 on the network. Just ignore most of what
the Verizon folks say and you will be OK!
