I was considering a Verizon DSL account until the Verizon rep told me I need OS X. I recall a thread sometime ago about using DSL w/o using all the Verizon software. Could anyone point me in the right direction in the archives to that info, or does anyone have experience using Verizon DSL on a power mac (not upgraded to G3 or G4)? I have a Performa 6400/180, and am running OS 8.1

I'm going to assume here that Verizon DSL uses The Abomination known as PPPoE.

Yup. Verizon uses PPPoE for tracking. :\

That would be one reason for requiring OS X. While there are OS 9 clients, they have problems. OS X's PPPoE client appears to work reasonably well.

Something about the flavour of PoE that Verizon uses - it doesn't get along well with MacPoet etc. Stable with the built-in support in Panther and Tiger tho.

A simple way around it though is to use a router, even if you only have one machine. The router deals with PPPoE and your computer(s) only need to access it via ordinary TCP/IP.

That's what I've had to do with all my clients here. Reasonable solution, IMO. PPPoE is a PITA. The farther away from your Macs and PCs it is, the better.

FWIW,
- Dan.
