Check your SCSI arrangement as well ... making sure only the last one
on the internal chain of devices is properly terminated.
Curious ... What OS are you running? and from the internal SCSI HD?
CDROM working OK?

Okl, ill do that. Right now put the drive as a second (actually,
third) drive in a 9500/120 I have sitting around. So now I'm gonna get
the data off the drive, replace it in the 8600, pull the CPU card,
replace it good, push the cuda for 30 seconds, and see if I get a BONG
this time.
