OK, I finally said "Enough Troubleshooting..." And I bought a new SoundBlaster sound card. Problem fixed.
Now, I have a more elemenary problem. Does anyone know how to change the association of an extension. Specifically, Creative Player has taken .mp3 from WinAmp. I was thinking that when I started WinAmp I would get a "WinAmp is not you default player, would you ...." message, but NO.
